What types of solar panels are available
There are two types of solar panels: photovoltaic solar and thermal solar.

Do I qualify for the Solar Electricity Grant?
To receive a grant you must:
- Own a house built and lived in before 2021
- Use new materials and products that are not covered by another financing program.

- Have the electrical work carried out by a Safe Electric Ireland electrician.
- Provide a Statement of Work signed by an installer registered on the SEAI list of approved solar PV installers.
- Once the works are completed, carry out an energy assessment of the building (BER).
- Comply with the requirements of the Solar PV Code of Practice

If you are applying for an individual SEAI grant for your property, it is up to the homeowner or landlord to complete the application process.
However, if you are applying for a grant under the SEAI One Stop Shop service or for a fully funded energy upgrade, which may include solar energy, the application process will be managed for you.
A building permit is not required before applying for the SEAI Solar Grant as this will not be taken into account when the grant is approved.
However, depending on the size of the solar system to be installed and the location of your home, farm or business, you may need planning permission to install solar panels in Ireland.
The government has reduced the VAT rate on domestic solar panels to 0%, meaning thousands more euros can be saved on top of grants.
Excess energy generated by solar photovoltaic panels can be sold back to the national grid through a Net Export Premium feed-in tariff. This means you can recover the costs of your solar modules even faster.
The SEAI Solar Grant only applies to solar panels and there is no additional grant for solar battery storage. You have to finance this yourself.
The government has confirmed plans to further reduce the solar panel subsidy each year until it is phased out entirely in 2029.
